Premama: Serving Up a Happy, Healthy Pregnancy...One Glass at a Time

Below is the second in a nine-part blog series on these special local companies.

It started in the supplement aisle at Whole Foods. Dan Aziz struck up a conversation with an expectant mom who was struggling to find a prenatal vitamin that wasn’t the size of a horse pill and wouldn’t worsen her morning sickness. But despite decades of clinical support for prenatal vitamins, store shelves hadn’t changed much and were still chock full of mammoth pills that are hard to swallow and formulated in ways that make pregnancy concerns--constipation, heartburn, nausea, etc.--worse.

Inspired by this serendipitous encounter, Dan set out to bring an outdated industry into the modern age, determined to make it easier--and more pleasant--for women to get the supplements they need. From this ambitious goal, Premama was born.

The Premama opportunity was two fold--daily essential prenatal vitamins that are easier to take and easier on the stomach. To tackle the task, the Premama team enlisted the help of hundreds of pregnant women, respected OBGYNs, and natural food experts to create a better solution for maternity wellness. The solution was as elegant as it was simple: swap pills for updated powdered formulations that women can add to any beverage.

Premama’s pill-free, drink mix solutions contain high-quality, clinically-studied and physician-approved ingredients, and are designed to blend seamlessly with liquids and soft foods. Beyond prenatal vitamins, Premama offers a comprehensive collection of natural and palatable pill-free therapies for many preconception and postnatal concerns.

Dan, a Brown University grad, scores high marks as a founder for his tenacity. Not every young man graduating from college would dare tackle prenatal supplements as their first venture. Beyond getting the formulations right--something Dan did with the help of a small army of health and wellness professionals--he also had to build a line of products that could stand out in a crowded market place. Even before he built a team, Dan single-handedly got Premama placed into the top retail chains.

“I wanted to start a business in supplements because due to my life-threatening neck injury, I had a strong focus in health. I never thought this journey would lead to prenatals especially not being an actual pre-mama, but I’m so glad it did,” says Dan Aziz.

Essentials + DHA: A citrus-flavored prenatal multivitamin drink mix designed to blend with non-carbonated liquids to deliver an exclusive formulation of nutrients, along with DHA to support healthy fetal development and Vitamin B6 to soothe morning sickness.
Fertility: An unflavored drink mix supplement designed to mix with non-carbonated liquids to deliver an exclusive formulation that includes Myo-Inositol, which helps naturally support healthy egg production and ovulation.
Lactation: A berry-flavored drink mix supplement designed to mix with non-carbonated liquids and formulated with Fenugreek, Fennel Seed and Blessed Thistle to help naturally support healthy milk production, along with Folic Acid, Vitamin D3, Calcium and other essential nutrients for both mother and baby.

Premama is growing fast and on the move! The team recently launched a rebranding initiative, which includes a new packaging concept and two new pill-free product solutions.
